I have always appreciated the moment when a person connects new information or learning with a phenomenon they recognize in the world around them. We sometimes call this the “Ah ha!” moment. During my summers in high school and college, I was fortunate to work at the Montshire Museum of Science where I shared hands-on science activities with people of all ages, usually in the same group. At this time of my life, I was adamant that I wouldn’t become a teacher. However, these “Ah ha!” experiences stuck with me and played a strong role in my professional choices.
In 2005, I graduated from the University of New Hampshire with my Bachelor of Science. It became clear that my passion for science and teaching couldn’t be ignored and, in 2006, I completed my NH Teachers Certification through the Upper Valley Teachers Institute (UVTI). During my time at UVEI, I interned at Newport.
For seven years I taught health and science at Newport High School and I coached the varsity field hockey team and middle school softball team. In 2011, I completed my Master of Science in Education through Capella University. I became active in school leadership and the co-president of the Newport Teacher’s Association.
In 2014, I had the opportunity to lead a middle and high school in Vermont and served there for three years as their principal. During this time, I learned a great deal about what it means to be an instructional leader. While I was passionate about this school, I found I missed Newport. In 2017, I was honored to be welcomed back to Newport as principal of the middle and high Schools.
While I may not be teaching in a classroom, I still appreciate the “Ah ha!” moment and find these moments daily in my work with teachers and students. I am proud to serve the staff, students and families of Newport and am delighted to build on our relationships in the coming years.
